LUKE BOWEN – LEEDS SNOWRIDERS

BUSC has been around for over 25 years now, so covering all of it is nigh on impossible, but check out some of it’s highlights below;

1992 - 2000

Not much is known from these heady days of British University Snowsports,

But, what we do know is that the first “BUSC” Championships were held in 1993 in Les Menuires, run by a committee from Bristol University.
Followed by BUSC moving to Tignes in 1994, then bounding between Les Arcs and La Plagne until 2000, where BUSC ventured into a new territory, a place that would become infamous in years to come…

2000 - 2004

The year 2000 brought a great deal…

The Playstation 2 was released, it was Bush vs Gore to see who would rule the USA, the world was gripped by Harry Potter fever as ‘The Goblet of Fire’ was published, the world wasn’t wiped out by the ‘Millennium Bug’ and BUSC was held in Saalbach Hinterlemm for the first time.. but certainly not the last.

In the early 2000’s we begin to get a clear picture of what BUSC was like… mostly because there are a few pictures, check out the gallery below!
The beautiful combination of clubs coming together for a week of competition and letting loose at the end of the season continued, each year bringing with it a new committee, a new resort and new memories for everyone that went.

2005 - 2007

2005 sees BUSC undergo two of it’s biggest changes so far.

1) The BUSC Championships became.. BUSC Main Event, the first step in creating one of the biggest events in student snowsports.

2) To maintain stability and longevity in what was fast becoming a very competitive scene, the then BUSC Committee partnered with already long time supporters Wasteland Ski to create the Event Travel Company, a tour operator specifically set-up to handle the now Main Event. A relationship which still operates today, and has taken BUSC to some incredible heights.

After only a year of these changes taking effect 2006 brought about the biggest BUSC Event in history, with over 2500 BUSCateers quite literally take over Les Arcs, even by todays large group standards, this one was huge!

But bigger and better was just around the corner…

2008 - 2014

2008… Regarded as BUSC Main Events true coming of age.
The then UWE Committee took BUSC back to Saalbach, and bringing to the table a level of event production not seen in any student snowsports event before. It can be easily argued that this was the spark the lit the touchpaper and is why the huge events we have today exist.

Saalbach in 2008 brought together the perfect mix of music, riding apres and set the standard for years to come.

The following few years saw BUSC establish it’s spiritual home, Alpe D’Huez.
Continuing the now expected levels of event production and including more competitions in the program 2009 – 2014 is when BUSC became a truly jam-packed week. But the growing industry was beginning to show, with clubs getting better offers outside of BUSC and term dates becoming ever more fractured, numbers were beginning to dwindle from the golden days… but not for long.

2015 & Beyond

2015, the year BUSC received it’s first face-lift.
Sure, there had been a little Botox here and there but now was the time for some real change.

With each major event getting a re-brand and BUSC Main Event becoming Above & Below (to show the dichotomy of the competitions and events) . BUSC was ready to meet so many of the new clubs which had appeared in recent years… and a lot of old faithfuls too of course.
2015 also saw the introduction of a full, complete partnership with BUCS, so now all competitions would be sanctioned, something which University clubs had been gagging for.

Back in it’s spiritual home once again, BUSC is in a truly outstanding place, it’s survived everything that’s been thrown at it and the future is looking brighter than ever.

Here’s to bringing more clubs together than ever before, creating friendships that otherwise wouldn’t happen and creating special events for the student snowports community for many more years to come
